Similar to post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), preheating the welding joint before welding serves as a way to improve performance and the integrity of the weld. It does this by alleviating stresses in the weld joint including cracking and lack of fusion. It can also minimise distortion, increase weld penetration, and improve the weldability of hardened steels.
