9 Artists and Sculptors Making Beautiful Welded Furniture

Are you looking for some welding project inspiration or a unique piece of furniture or art?

Furniture doesn’t have to be shiny and new to look great. These artists and sculptors all take old pieces of machinery or reclaimed “junk” and turn them into beautiful pieces of artwork and furniture.
So stop looking at those old pieces of pipe that you’ve got in the garden with distaste, those pallets thinking they are rubbish and the pile of off-cuts with dismay, see what can be done with those old bits and pieces – you might just be surprised!

Vintage Industrial

USA based Vintage Industrial founder Greg Hankerson first started to build furniture when his wife requested a new table for the patio. Eager to save money and avoid adorning his home with poorly made imports, he upped tools and built one out of scrap metal and some wood from an old table that had caught on fire. Happy with his first piece but knowing he could do better Greg made several other pieces before starting to sell his work. Before you know it, he was struggling to keep up with the orders and needed a team; Vintage Industrial was officially launched in January 2011. It’s easy to see why Greg struggled to keep up with orders. The totally unique, industrial-inspired pieces are classic, robust and a real pleasure to look at. From coffee tables to art and seating solutions, the furniture feels like it could outlive even the youngest patron. Don’t believe us, take a look below and have a look at the gallery on their website.

Tim Delger

Tim Delger, a Texas-born designer, was always destined to a take a unique path through life. The son of an engineer and an artist; creativity and precision flows through his veins and makes itself known through his artwork, sculpture and furniture design. Tim learned to weld at the tender age of just 12 and is now using his talent to create and design home furnishings made from reclaimed street signs. From chairs to side tables and benches each piece is a one of a kind and would make the ultimate talking point. His collection remains in an almost permanent state of being sold out thanks to its popularity, but we’re sure that you could get in touch with Tim and find out how you can get your hands on one anyway.

Junktion

Founded in Tel Aviv in 2008, Junktion is a group of city dwellers who were determined to revive what the city and its inhabitants have classified as junk. The team believe that there’s already enough “stuff” in the world, and rather than creating more, they try to take from what already exists and turn it into something new and desirable; something functional. They take every day items such a bicycles, suitcases and even teapots and take them out of context, transforming them in to chairs, storage solutions and even crockery! The care and attention that has been taken with each piece is truly spectacular. Whether you’re looking to buy or just need some inspiration of your own there’s no better place to start.

Brian Mock

Brian has always had a passion for art. From spending his childhood drawing to his adulthood painting, wood crafting and wood carving, there’s nothing that he won’t turn his hand to. Fast forward a few years and Brian has found where his true love lies; sculpting with metal. A self-taught welder, Brian’s precision and attention to detail really does set his work apart from other metal workers; just take a look at his collection of dogs which have been crafted from chains, bolts, odds and sods. Transforming these unloved, commonplace and discarded items in to something new and unique is a demanding task, but one that is incredibly rewarding at the same time. Personally, we can’t keep our eyes off of the beautiful miniature automobiles which range from sleek dragster’s to the almost steam punk-inspired Weed Eater. Take a look at his website, make sure you’ve got a cup of tea to hand – you’ll be there a while!

David Freeman

With a degree in psychology and a talent for creating delicate and intricate sculptures and traditional ironwork for the home; David is a man of many skills. He’s spent the last fifteen years as an artist blacksmith, starting his career by making artistic gates in London and Kent before moving to Mill Forge in Cheshire. What makes David’s work so unique is how he manages to balance art and craft with function and practicality without sacrificing style or design. He’s determined to keep the traditional skills alive but combines this with more modern technology as well to create breath-taking sculptures and furniture. His outdoor benches with their delicate vines and leaves are spectacular, and would be the envy of neighbours, friends, and family alike. Keep an eye out for David’s work as he frequently attends exhibitions both locally and nationally as well as art galleries and garden shows. Check out his website to see his portfolio and more of his incredible work.

Stig

Bob Campbell, also known as “Stig,” is a self-taught sculptor based in South Yorkshire. South Yorkshire is an area of the UK that was traditionally recognised as a centre for heavy engineering and steel production. Sadly, the area experienced a dramatic decline from the 1980’s onwards, but Bob does an incredible job of keeping the feeling of the era alive with his jaw-dropping creations. Crafted from reclaimed and reused bits and pieces from abandoned and unused industrial machinery, his sculptures have a rugged, aesthetic beauty and a new function. The “Boiler Makers Breakfast” dining set has a real Game of Thrones feel to it, whilst the incredible tables and chairs made from meters and meters of chains defy gravity. It really is inspiring to see these previously unloved artefacts turned into something beautiful and practical. Take a look through Bob’s site to see what he’s got for sale at the minute as well as the bespoke pieces that have been and gone. We will warn you though, make sure you have your bank card at the ready!

Lisa Fedon

Lisa is a world-class artist who has been creating beautiful artwork from wire for over 30 years. Her talents don’t stop at wire though, she’s fused her passion for graphic design with her love of working in steel and bronze. Initially focusing on the human form, Lisa only started to create sculptural furnishing for the home and garden in 1996, and we’re so glad she did! Lisa designs and creates a range of tables, seating solutions and decorative pieces, the likes of which you’ve never seen before. The games table “It’s Your Move” is one of our favourite miscellaneous pieces, but it’s the gorgeous heirloom tables that we’re dreaming about having in our home. The delicate features and the perfect balance of reclaimed materials and glass make these functional pieces of art, rather than just your standard coffee table. Take a look at her creations here!

Alan Williams

Since he was a child, Alan has always been making sculptures. Admittedly he’s moved on from the days of broken toys and a tube of super glue. These days he favours sledgehammers and angle grinders and rather than fixing broken toys prefers to create bespoke sculptures, furniture and decorative pieces. His passion is creating sculptures and animals from found and reclaimed metal. Take, for example, the frog leg steps which have been crafted from forged steel and reclaimed wood from Brighton West Pier, or the beautiful musical chairs which feature one of the most beautiful backs we’ve ever seen! Check out Alan’s site to see more of his work and find out more about his story.

Ashley Baldwin-Smith

Ashley is a sculptor, designer and artist based in Cambridge. Working in a variety of mixed media including, but not limited to, metal, oils, acrylics and concrete, Ashely creates everything from sculptural metal furniture to landscape oil painting and even abstract art. Most of the sculptural work Ashley creates has been crafted from found metal objects whether it’s a surgical instrument, farm implement or the inner workings of machines. There really is something to appeal to everyone. For example, the circadian glass table is a gorgeous piece that you might expect to find in a designer outlet, whilst the B-Chair looks much more rugged and rustic. Take a look at all of his designs on his website!
