The company with a long tradition was founded in 1922 as Kjellberg Elektro-Maschinen GmbH by Oscar Kjellberg, the inventor of the coated rod electrode after whom the company was named. In 1959, Kjellberg Finsterwalde started the development of plasma cutting technology. In 1962, a patent application for FineFocus plasma cutting was filed in cooperation with the scientist Manfred von Ardenne.
